Allied Diagnostics has a dedicated female team for Women’s Health. Mammography and breast ultrasound are performed in private, comfortable, relaxing surroundings.

Mammography is a special type of x-ray imaging used to create detailed images of the breast and plays a major role in the early detection of breast cancers.

It has been shown that the number of deaths from breast cancer in the 50-64 age group are reduced by 40% in those who attend screening.

The digital mammography equipment that Allied Diagnostics uses means a clearer image is produced, meaning more accurate results.

How do I prepare for my mammogram?

Your mammogram should be scheduled between day 1 and day 10 of your menstrual cycle. Day 1 being the first day you menstruate. If you are post menopausal, appointments can be made at your convenience.

Do not wear any deodorant, talcum powder or lotion under your arms or on your breasts on the day of the exam as these can appear on the images as dense spots.

It is very important to bring all previous breast imaging (previous MRI, mammogram and ultrasound) reports and CD images/films on the day of the exam for the radiologist to review and to have a comprehensive impression of your breast health.

What can I expect during my study?

When you arrive you will be asked to fill in a few forms relating to your scan, after completing the forms you will be asked to change into a gown and your belongings will be locked away safely.

The Radiographer will then take you into the scan room.

In order to obtain good quality standard images, the breast tissue has to be compressed between two smooth plates for the x-ray to be taken. It is usual to do this in two planes, but sometimes further views of a specific area of the breast tissue may be required to assess the area better. This usually occurs only after the radiologist has reviewed the initial mammograms.

Further investigation of breast lesions may need to be performed with ultrasound or MRI.

Is it safe?

Mammography does use low energy x-rays, however digital mammography scanners minimise the dose of x-rays used.

The fact that the image can be manipulated after the scan has been performed, means there is less need for repeat scans for poor images.

When will I get the results?

The results of your scan will be sent to your referring Physician within 24 hours of your exam. Your report and images will include a summary of the radiologist’s findings and recommendations for further follow-up.
