Breast screening

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths for women. Successful treatment of breast cancer is linked to an early diagnosis.
Mammography plays a central part in early detection of breast cancers showing changes in the breasts up to two years before a patient or doctor can feel them.
Adding ultrasound to breast screening significantly increases the detection of cancers, especially among women with dense breasts (dense breasts usually occur in younger women who are on HRT, Hormone Replacement Treatment). A comprehensive breast ultrasound can be performed quickly, yielding high-quality images critical for establishing accurate diagnosis, through high frequency sound waves. No radiation is involved for ultrasound.
We also offer Breast MRI. Currently, most Breast MRI candidates are women who are a high risk of cancer, newly diagnosed with cancer or have recently undergone treatment.
By correlating the patient’s breast MRI with other studies including ultrasound and mammography, we are able to provide the most accurate diagnosis. Bilateral breast MRI technology generates exceptionally detailed images of breast tissues. It is an extremely accurate method of disease detection throughout the breast and surrounding anatomy. MRI scanning determines the extent of the disease bilaterally and reveals lymph node involvement. The goal of this advanced technology is to allow detection of new breast cancers at earlier stages and enhance the management and care of our patients.
Every woman is at risk, however, some factors increase a woman’s risk such as:
- Family history of breast cancer
- Not having children
- Smoking
- Regular drinking of alcohol
- Overweight
- Past radiation treatment of the chest
It is advisable for women over 40 to have breast screening every two years continuing long into their 80s.
